How Do I Join?

If you are interested in joining, you are more than welcome to come along and visit any of our clubs to see what it’s like. You can watch a lesson and speak to the Instructor(s) who will be happy to answer any questions or queries you have.

Tony Sewell’s Martial Arts Academy is also offering you the chance to ‘try before you buy’, giving you 2 completely FREE lessons with NO obligation to join at the end, giving you the chance to try Martial Arts for yourself, before you make any definite decisions.

All beginners are entitled to a 2 free no-obligation trial class so please feel free to search for your nearest club (see class times page) and pop down wearing something loose and comfortable. Our classes are structured so that we can cater for new beginners joining throughout the year. Do not worry about having no experience or being unfit as our experienced instructors will help you train at and develop your fitness at your own pace.

Once you join, all students are able to cross-train at any of our 3 schools for one monthly training fee – Derby, Chilwell or Beeston. For your free trial classes select the town nearest to you, print the Free Trial Voucher (click here) and take it to your nearest club.

What should I wear?
We recommend that you wear loose clothing so that you are able to move freely. Suitable clothing would consist of loose trousers or track suit bottoms (not jeans), and a T-shirt or sports top.

Remember you need to wear something comfortable and suitable for physical activities. As you progress, we will be able to supply you with the uniform, appropriate badges, and safety equipment required for grading and further training.

What does a typical lesson consist of?
Lessons usually last for at least one hour. The first 15 – 20 minutes are normally spent stretching and warming up with the remaining time spent training at the Instructors discretion, therefore the class will vary from day to day.

During a lesson you may practise line work, patterns, sparring techniques, self defence and wood breaking (more advanced grades).

How long will to take before I get to Black Belt?
It should take approximately 4 years to reach black belt. Colour belt gradings are taken roughly every three months to begin with, until you reach blue belt and become more advanced then gradings will be taken every six months.
